Gypsy Cowl with Bead Ruffle

Free Cowl Knitting Pattern

Materials:
Red Heart (affiliate link) Boutique Treasure aran weight yarn (70% acrylic /30% wool), 151 yds (138m) / 100g, color 1901 Mosaic  - 2 balls

Seed beads #2 (optional)

Needles: US # 10.5 (6.5 mm)
Hook: 4.25 mm

Patterns

Stockinette stitch
Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat rows 1 and 2

Seed stitch
Row 1: *k1, p1 repeat from * across the row
Row 2: *p1, k1 repeat from * across the row
Repeat rows 1 and 2

Directions:

Cast on 25 sts using waste yarn and provisional cast on method.

Divide the 25 sts into 5 groups with 5 sts in each group.
Work the first 5 sts in stockinette, work the second group of 5 sts in seed stitch, work the third group of 5 sts in stockinette, work the fourth group of 5 sts in seed stitch, work the fifth group of 5 sts in stockinette.

Row 1: sl1, k4; k1, p1, k1, p1, k1; k5; k1; p1, k1, p1, k1; k5.
Row 2: sl1, p4; p1, k1, p1, k1, p1; p5; p1, k1, p1, k1, p1; p5.

Repeat rows 1-2 until it is 70 inches (175cm) long.

Finishing

Unravel the waste yarn and graft the short edges. You'll get a ring.

Thread seed beads on remaining yarn.
With hook, crochet the fringe on one of the long edges of the ring:
*ch 5, pull a bead. ch 5, sc*, rep from * along the edge.

I have "been in love" with this cowl for a year. Finally, I am starting this. May I ask, how many beads should I plan on stringing on the yarn when (if) I get to the "chaining" ruffle?

Love the look. For the Seed Stitch pattern: Since there are an uneven number of stitches (groups of 5) shouldn't you always use [k1, p1, k1, p1, k1] so that you are always knitting a purl stitch?
