With MC chain .
Row 1 (RS): ch1 (counts as 1st sc) 56 sc across. DO NOT TURN.
Row 2 (RS): with CC secure the yarn at the beg of the row, ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), 1 dc, *ch 1, skip 1 st, 3 dc, repeat from * across, end with ch 1, skip 1 st, 2 dc. TURN
Row 3: (WS): with MC ch 1 (counts as 1st sc), 1 sc, *1 BPdc around the skipped sc of the 1st row, 3 sc, rep from * across, end with 1 BPdc, 2 sc. DO NOT TURN.

CARDIGAN
The cardigan is worked from the top down without seams in Two-Tone pattern. The garment starts at the shoulder line. The back and fronts are crocheted separately from the top of the back to the armholes. Each is worked back and forth to the underarms. Then stitches added for the underarms and the rest of the body is worked as one piece. Sleeves are worked from the armholes back and forth in single crochet and then in-the-round in double crochet.
Back
With MC chain 57.
Work Two-Color pattern for 32 rows ending with the wrong side CC row.
Front
Right Front
With MC start from the top of the back, over the first 17 sts.
Work Two-Color pattern for 32 rows, ending with wrong side CC row.
To shape the V-neck starting from the 10th row (CC row) work 2 dc in the last dc (or ch2, 1 dc in the first st) in every CC row. Total 12 times. Stitch count 29 sts.
Left Front
With MC start from the top of the back, over the last 17 sts.
Work Two-Color pattern for 32 rows, ending with wrong side CC row.
To shape the V-neck starting from the 10th row (CC row) work ch2, 1 dc in the first st (or 2 dc in the last dc) in every CC row. Total 12 times. Stitch count 29 sts.
Bodice
With MC, RS facing, work row across the left front, ch 16 for the left underarm, work across the back, ch 16 for the right underarm, work across right front. Total 147 sts
Work Two-Tone pattern for 40 rows or to desired length.
Sleeves
With MC, RS facing work 61 sc along the side (armhole) edges of the back and front. After the last sc connect the row with slip st to the underarm edge, turn. Work 9 rows of sc ending with the RS row. With sl st join to the first sc and continue to work the sleeve in the round. Place marker.
Continue to work the sleeve in double crochet in the round. Work 20 rounds of dc or to desired length. To shape the sleeve decrease by 1 st on both sides of the marker in every other round by working dc-cluster.
Work 6 rounds of sc. Decrease by 1 st in every round at the marker. Tie off.
FINISHING
With MC work neck band, button band, bottom band and buttonhole band in single crochet in the round. To shape the corners between the bottom band and button and buttonhole bands by increasing by 2 sts in every round. To shape the V-neck corners (between the button bands and neck band) increase by 1 st in every other round. To shape the neckband decrease by 1 st in every round at the shoulder lines. Work 9 rounds.
In round 5 make 5 evenly-spaced buttonholes on right front edge (or left front edge for a boy) by working *ch 2, skip 2 sts.
Weave in ends. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
