Free Earflap Hat Knitting Pattern
Head circumference: 21" (53 cm)
Materials: Sensations Soles & More self-striping sock yarn color 1811 262 yds (240 m) / 60 gr - 1 ball (A)
Lorna's Laces (affiliate link) hand dyed yarn Shepherd Sock Nearly Solids Color 24 Navy 219yds /2 oz (56 gr) - 1 skein (B)
Needles: 1 (2.25 mm) a pair of single pointed and 5 double pointed OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
Gauge: 24 st x 38 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)
Patterns:
Stocking Stitch:
1 row and all odd rows - knit sts
2 row and all even rows - purl sts
Rib:
2 k, 2 p
Directions:
Main part:
Cast on 32 sts (including edge stitches) with yarn A.
Knit stocking stitch for 21" (53 cm). Cast off.
Crown:
Pick up 87 sts (including edge stitches) with yarn B along the edge of the hat's main part and knit 20 rows of stocking stitch.
Rows 1-4: stocking stitch.
Rows 5-20: decrease evenly 9 sts in each odd row 8 times.
Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through 13 remaining sts and secure.
Brim
Pick up 150 sts (including edge stitches) with yarn B along the other edge of the hat's main part and knit 20 rows of rib: 2 k, 2 p. Cast off.
EarFlaps:
Cast on 36 sts on double pointed needles with yarn A, join and knit stocking stitch in rounds like socks.
Rnds 1-34: stocking stitch
Rnds 35-40: decrease 1 st on each needle as follows: the first st on the 1st and 3rd needles and the last st on the 2nd and 4th needles. Decrease in each rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a 5" (125 cm) tail. Pull through 8 remaining sts and secure.
Finishing:
Join the back seam.
Sew on earflaps on the edge of main part.
Make 1 pompon. Sew it one on the crown of the hat.
Crochet two 3" (7 cm) lengths of I-cord and sew them to the earflaps.
