Summer Breeze Hat (Knit Version) for 18-inch Doll

Free Doll Hat Knitting Pattern

The hat is worked top down, in rounds, without seams. The brim is shaped with millinery wire.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing:yarn over (YO), knit front and back (kfr&b)

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk)

-Working in the round on double pointed needles

Materials:
Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s 100% Mercerized Cotton, Size 3, 150yd/138m, color - Natural - 1 ball.

Notions: yarn needle, millinery wire 20 gauge, pliers, narrow ribbon

Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) dpn and circular needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge for stockinette stitch: 24 st x 32 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm).

Hat

Cast on 9 sts on dpn leaving at least a 6" (15 cm) tail, distribute the sts evenly on 3 needles. Join into round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place marker at the beginning of the round.
Round 1: knit
Round 2: k 1, yo to the end of the round = 18 sts
Rounds 3-4: knit
Round 5: k 1, yo to the end of the round = 36 sts
Rounds 6-9: knit
Round 10: k 1, yo to the end of the round = 72 sts
Rounds 11-29: knit
Round 30: insert right/working needle into the front of the st which is 3 rows below next st on left needle, pick up the right leg of the st and place it on the left needle; k this loop together with next st on needle, work all sts like the first one to the end of the round. This will form the fold between the the body and the brim.
Round 31: k 1, yo to the end of the round = 144 sts
Round 32: knit
Round 33: yo, k2tog, to the end of the round
Round 34: knit
Round 35: k1, *yo, k2tog, repeat from * to the end of the round, end with k2tog, working the last and the first st of the round, move marker after this st, it will shift the beg. of the round 1 st to the left.
Round 36: knit
Rounds 37-40: repeat rounds 35-36.
Rounds 41-42: knit
Next round is worked around the millinery wire.
Cut the wire and secure the end with the tape. Hold the wire behin the brim.
Round 43: Insert left needle over the wire into back loop of the st which is 3 rows below next st
on needle; knit this loop together with next st on needle; work this for every st to end of round.
Secure the ends of the wire using a joiner and pliers.
Bind off.



Finishing

Thread a ribbon along the last round befor the brim. Decorate with flowers.

Wondering where you find millinery wire? Found some online, but shipping was ridiculously expensive.

Not sure if you're still left wondering, Joanne, but you could likely use jewelry making wire found at craft shops. Did you make the hat?
