Sporty Snowsuit (Jacket, Pants and Hat) for 18-inch Doll

Free Doll Suit Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing:yarn over (YO), make 1 (m1)

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog)

-Working in the round on double pointed needles

-Picking up stitches

Materials:

Basic II Chenille bulky weight yarn (polyester/acrylic), 59m/65 yds 50g/1.7 oz) - 1.5 ball (A)
Paton (affiliate link)s Classic Wool Worsted worsted weight yarn (100% wool), 192m/210 yds 100g/3.5 oz) - 1 ball (B)

Notions: yarn needle, 4 stitch markers, 2 pieces of waste yarn, 5 small buttons.

Needles: circular and/or dpn US #10 (6 mm) and dpn US #8 (5 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for Basic II Chenille, stockinette stitch on US # 10 ( 6 mm): 10 st x 12 rows = 4"x4" (10 cm)

Abbreviations:

dpn – double pointed needles

K – knit

P – purl

St – stitch

Sts - stitches

as est. - as established, work as the pattern demands, here knit the RS rows and purl the WS rows.

co – cast on

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

pu&k- pick up and knit
kfr&b - knit first in the front of the st then in the back of the same st.

m 1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit it as a regular stitch.

bb – button band

pm - place marker

sm - slip marker


Pattern Notes:

Stockinette Stitch in rows:
Row 1 (RS and all RS rows): knit
Row 2 (WS and all WS rows): purl

Repeat 2 rows.

Stockinette Stitch in rounds: all rows - knit

1 x 1 Rib in rows: multiple of 2, plus 1

Row 1 (RS): *k 1, p 1 - repeat from * to last st, k1

Row 2 (WS): *p1, k1 - repeat from * to last st, p1

Repeat 2 rows.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: knit the first stitch and purl the last one.

Raglan increases: Increase for raglan by making 1 st (m1) on each side of indicated, marked, stitch in every right side (RS) row: m1, sm (slip marker), k1 (raglan st), m1. Thus the number of sts will increase by 8. See picture here

Jacket

The jacket is worked from top down, back and forth without seams in stockinette on US#10 needles with yarn A. Button bands, cuffs and the bottom band are worked in 1x1 rib on US#8 needles with yarn B. Collar is worked in stockinette on US#8 needles with yarn B.

Using larger size needles and yarn A, cast on 18 sts and purl one, foundation, row.
Check the stitches and place markers:
1 edge st, 2 sts (left front), 1 st (raglan line, place the first marker before this st), 2 sts (left sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place the second marker before this stitch), 4 sts (back), 1 st (raglan line, place the third marker before this stitch), 2 sts (right sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place the forth marker before this stitch), 2 sts (right front), 1 edge st.
Row 1 (RS and all RS rows): sl1, *knit all sts till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1 - repeat from * 4 times, knit till last st, p1. (+8 sts)

Row 2 (WS and all WS rows): sl1, purl all sts to the end, slip sts while working.

Repeat rows 1-2 four more times.
After row 1, the number of sts is 26 sts

After row 3 = 34 sts

After row 5 = 42 sts

After row 7 = 50 sts

After row 9 = 58 sts

Divide for sleeves and bodice:

Row 11 (RS): k 9 (left front), transfer 12 sts of the left sleeve to a length of yarn,
k 16 (back), transfer 12 sts of the right sleeve to a length of yarn, k 8, p1 (left front). = 34 sts

Row 12 (WS): k33, p1

Row 13 (RS): k1, p33.
Repeat rows 12-13 two more times or to desired length, repeat row 12 one more time.

Row 19 (RS): change to yarn B and smaller needles, k33, p1.

Row 20: *k1, p1 - repeat from * across. Repeat row 20 four more times. Bind off.

Sleeves

Transfer 12 sts of the sleeve to dpn and work 10 rounds of stockinette st, change to yarn B and smaller needles and work 5 rows of 1x1 rib. Bind off.

Button bands
Left bb:
Row 1: (RS) Using larger needles and yarn B, with RS facing, pick up and knit 27 sts along the left front edge starting from neckline and to hem. Work 5 rows of 1x1 rib:

Row 2 (WS): k2, (p1, k1) x 12 times, p1. (=27 sts)

Row 3 (RS): (k1, p1) x 13 times to last st, p1.

Repeat rows 2-3 one more time. Repeat row 2 one more time. Bind off.

Rigth bb:
Row 1: With RS facing, pick up and knit 27 sts, from hem to neckline, along the right front edge.

Row 2 (WS): k2, (p1, k1) x 12 times, p1. (=27 sts)

Row 3 (RS): (k1, p1) x 13 times to last st, p1.

Row 4 (WS): k2, (yo, k2tog, p1, k1, p1, yo, k2tog, k1, p1, k1) x 2 times, yo, k2tog, p1, k1, p1.

Row 5 (RS): repeat row 3.

Row 6 (WS) repeat row 2. Bind off.


Collar

Row 1: With yarn B and smaller needles, wrong side facing, pick up and knit 26 sts along the neckline. of the jacket starting after and finishing before button bands.

Row 2 : k1, p25.

Row 3: k25, p1. Repeat rows 2-3 one more time, repeat row 2 one more time. Bind off and leave a 10-12" tail. Fold the collar in half and with the yarn's tail sew the bound-off edge to the base of the collar to make a mandarin collar.

Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends. Sew on buttons to the left button band.


Pants

Pants are made from yarn B only.

Needles: dpn US #4 (3.5mm).

Gauge 18 sts = 4"(10 cm)

Cast on 50 sts, join and continue to work in rounds, take care not to twist the sts, place a marker at the beg. of the round. Work 1x1 rib for 5 rounds: *k1, p1 - repeat from * across.
Round 6: k 25, m1 (place a marker before this st), k 25, sm (this is the marker which marks the beg of the round on this st), m1. =52 sts

Round 7: k52, slip markers while working.

Work 34 rounds. In rounds 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 increase by 1 st (M1) before and after the marked sts, thus increasing by 4 sts in each of these rounds. After round 12 the number of sts is 56.

After round 16 = 60 sts

After round 20 = 64 sts

After round 24 = 68 sts

After round 28 = 72 sts

After round 32 = 76 sts


Round 35: k38 .Transfer the remaining 38 sts to a piece of waste yarn.

Distribute the working sts on 4 dpn, cast on 3 sts and join into round, continue to work the pant leg in rounds. Work 33 rounds: k 41.

Work 12 more rounds in garter st (one round knit, one round purl). Bind off.

Transfer the sts from the waste yarn to dpn, pick up and knit 3 sts, join and continue to work the pant leg in rounds the same way as the first leg.


Hat

Needles: dpn US #4 (3.5mm) and dpn #7 (4.5mm)

With dpn #4 and yarn B, cast on 50 sts, distribute on 4 dpn and join to work in rounds, take care not to twist the sts Mark the beg of the round.
Work 7 rounds in 1x1 rib: * k1, p1 - repeat from * across.
Change to dpn #7 and yarn A. Work 7 rounds in stockinette: all rounds knit.
The next round (decrease round): *k3, k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round. = 40 sts
Knit the next round.
The next round (decrease round): *k2, k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round. = 30 sts
Knit the next 3 rounds.
The next round (decrease round): *k1, k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round. = 20 sts
Knit the next 2 rounds.
The next round (decrease round): *k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round. = 10 sts
Knit the next 2 rounds.
Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through all the sts and secure.

I am not sure about the gauge. It says 18 stitches = 4 ". I am used to it telling how many rows to knit as well as the number of stitches. Can you help me?
