Round 10(MC): *p6, k4 - rep from * across
Repeat rounds 3-10

1x1 Rib: multiple 2
All rounds: *k1, p1 - rep from * across

Short Overview:

The hat is worked from bottom up, in the round, without a seam.

Hat

With MC cast on 110 sts. Join into a round, taking care not to twist sts, place a marker at the beginning the round, slip the marker while working. Work 1x1 rib for 6 rounds.

Rounds 1-6: *K1, p1 - repeat from * 55 times. (=110 sts)

Round 7(MC): *k11, m1 - repeat from * around. (=120 sts)

Round 8 (MC): *p6, k4 - rep from * 12 times

Round 9 (CC): *k6, sl4 wyib - rep from * 12 times (round 3)

Round 10 (CC): *p6, sl4 wyib - rep from * 12 times

Round 11 (MC): knit

Round 12 (MC): *p6, k4 - rep from * 12 times

Round 13 (CC): like round 9

Round 14 (CC): like round 10

Round 15 (MC): *k6, 2/2 LC - rep from * 12 times

Round 16 (MC): *p6, k4 - rep from * 12 times

Repeat rounds 9-16 six more times.

Repeat rounds 9-10 one more time.

Shaping the Crown:

To shape the crown, make decreases in the next round: (MC) *ssk, k2, k2tog, k4 - rep from * 12 times (=96 sts)

Work the next 5 rows as established by the pattern, now you have 4 sts between the cables.

the next round (MC): *p4, k4 - rep from * 12 times

the next round (CC): *k4, sl4 wyib - rep from * around

the next round (CC): *p4, sl4 wyib - rep from * around

the next round (MC): *k4, 2/2 LC - rep from * around

the next round (MC): *p4, k4 - rep from * around

Make another repeat of the pattern (rounds 3-10). In the last round of the repeat make another decrease:

*p2tog tbl, p2tog, k4 - rep from * 12 times. (=72 sts). Now you have 2 sts between the cables. Cut the CC yarn.

Continue to work with the MC. Transfer the stitches to dpn, distribute them evenly.

Work 2 rounds: *p2, k4 - rep from * 12 times.

The next round: *p2, 2/2LC - rep from * 12 times.

The next 2 rounds: *p2, k4 - rep from * 12 times.

The next round: *p2, ssk, k2tog - rep from * 12 times. (=48 sts)

The next 5 rounds: *p2, k2 - rep from * 12 times.

The next round: *p2tog, k2tog - rep from * 12 times. (=24 sts)

The next round: knit

The next round: *k2tog - rep from * 12 times. (= 12 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through all the remaining sts and secure.

Finishing: Weave in all yarn ends.

Enjoy!

Thanks for this design! I think I'm going to use it for the top portion of an 1898 Hat.
