Carolina Summer Hat for 18-inch Doll

Free Doll Hat Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing: knit front and back (kfr&b)

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk)

-Working in the round on double pointed needles or circular needles using "magic loop" technique

-Picking up stitches

-Basic crochet

Materials: Plymouth (affiliate link) Yarn Sockotta (45% cotton, 40% wool, 15% Nylon) fingering weight yarn, 3 1/2 oz/300 gr 414 yds/379 m - 1/2 ball (Main Color - MC)
Small amount, about 2 yrds of Knit Picks (affiliate link) Stroll Fingering weight yarn, 50 gr/ 231 yrd /211 m (75% wool, 25% Nylon), color Barn Red (Contrasting Color - CC) are used for the crochet band and flower.

Notions: yarn needle, crochet hook 2.5 mm, sewing needle and thread to attach band and flower.

Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) dpn or circular needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for garter stitch: 26 st x 48 rows = 4" x 4"(10 cm x 10 cm)

Pattern Notes:

Garter stitch in rounds:
Round 1 and all odd rounds - knit
Round 2 and all even rounds - purl

Repeat 2 rounds.

Abbreviations:

k - knit

p - purl

k2tog - knit 2 together

ssk - slip, slip, knit

kfr&b - knit front and back

st, sts - stitch, stitches

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

Hat

The hat is worked in rounds on dpn or circular needles using "magic loop" technique, from the bottom up. Then the stitches for the brim are picked up and worked from the center out. The crochet trim is optional and can be replaced with a silk/organdy ribbon and flower.

Cast on 78 sts, distribute the stitches evenly on dpn, join and continue to work in rounds., take care not to twist the stitches.
Round 1 and all odd rounds: knit.
Round 2 and all even rounds: *k1, p12 - repeat from * 6 times
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 nineteen times.
Round 39 (decrease round): * k1, ssk, k8, k2tog - repeat from * 6 times. = 66 sts.
Round 40: * k1, p10 - repeat from * 6 times
Round 41: knit,
Round 42: like round 40
Round 43 (decrease round): * k1, ssk, k6, k2tog - repeat from * 6 times. =54 sts
Round 44: * k1, p 8 - repeat from * 6 times
Round 45 (decrease round): * k1, ssk, k4, k2tog - repeat from * 6 times. = 42 sts
Round 46: * k1, p 6 - repeat from * 6 times
Round 47 (decrease round): * k1, ssk, k2, k2tog - repeat from * 6 times. = 30 sts
Round 48: * k1, p 4 - repeat from * 6 times
Round 49 (decrease round): * k1, ssk, k2tog - repeat from * 6 times. = 18 sts
Round 50: * k1, p2 - rep from * 6 times
Round 51 (decrease round): * k1, ssk - repeat from * 6 times
Round 52: purl
Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through all the remaining sts and secure.

Brim

Pick up and knit 78 sts along the hat's bottom edge.
Round 1 (increase round): * k5, kfr&b - repeat from * 13 times. = 91 sts
Round 2 and all even rounds : purl.
Round 3 (increase round): * k4, kfr&b - repeat from * 18 times to last 1 st, k1. = 109 sts
Round 5 (increase round): * k4, kfr&b - repeat from * 21 times to last 4 sts, k4. = 130 sts
Round 7 (increase round): * k4, kfr&b - repeat from * 26 times. = 156 sts
Round 8: purl

Round 9: knit

Repeat round 8 and 9 two more times.

Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends.

Crochet chain 15" (37 cm) long for band and sew it on.

Crochet a small flower:

Chain 4, join with sl st to make ring.
Round 1: ch 1 (counts as sc), 11 sc into the ring, sl st to ch 1.
Round 2: ch 1 (counts as sc), *2 sc into the next sc, 1 sc in the next sc, repeat from * 5 more times, sl st to ch 1. Tie off.
