Shawl

The shawl is worked from the top edge down with decreases on both sides. Then a border of V-sts with contrasting stripe and lace is added to the bottom of the shawl.

For the starting chain I used the Foundation Single crochet (fsc). You need to work 302. If you are not familiar with this technique, check out this video

Alternately, you can start with a regular 302-ch chain.

Set-up row: ch 3, skip 1, *V-st into next st, skip 2, repeat from * to the end of the row, end with skip 1 1 dc, turn.

Row 1: ch 3, 1 dc into ch-1 of the first V-st, *V-st into ch-1 of the next V-st, repeat to the end of the row, end with 1 dc into ch-1 of the last V-st, 1 dc into the top of ch 3, turn.

Row 2: ch 3, skip 1 dc, *V-st into ch-1 of the next V-st, repeat to the end of the row, end with skip 1 dc, 1 dc into the top of ch 3, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 25 times (50 rows). Tie off.

Border

Starting from the top right corner, work V-sts along the bottom edge of the shawl.
Row 1: ch 3, *V-st, repeat to the end of the edge, end with 1 dc into the las fsc, turn.
Row 2: with CC, repeat row 1.
Row 3: with MC, ch 3, *V-st, repeat from *, work double V-st at the bottom beginning and end of the last row of the main body of the shawl.
Row 4: with CC, ch 3, *V-st to the end of the row, end with 1 dc.
Row 5: with MC, repeat row 3
Row 6: ch 3, *V-st to the end of the row, end with 1 dc.
Row 7: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1), skip 1 st, *1 dc, ch 1, skip 1 st, repeat from * to the end of the row, end with 1 dc.
Row 8: ch 1, sc in 1st dc, * sc in next ch-1 space, ch 4, skip next 2 ch-1 spaces, (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc) in next ch-1 space, ch 4, skip 2 next ch-1 spaces, repeat from * to the end of the row, end with 1 sc.
Row 9: ch 1, 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, *ch 5, skip next ch-4, (2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space, ch 5, skip next ch 4, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * to the end of the row, end with 2 sc.
Row 10: ch 1, 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, *ch 6, skip next ch-4, (2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space, ch 6, skip next ch 4, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * to the end of the row, end with 2 sc.
Row 11: ch 1, 1 sc in each of first 2 sc, *ch 7, skip next ch-4, (2 dc, ch 1, picot, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space, ch 7, skip next ch 4, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * to the end of the row, end with 2 sc. Tie off.

Note on resizing the shawl:
If you would like to crochet a bigger shawl, start with a longer foundation chain, increase in multiples of 3 plus 2. If you want to make it wider, crochet more rows for the body of the shawl. For the lace edge you should have multiples of 12 sts plus 2 (6 (1dc + ch 1). If you have less or more sts for a full repeat in row 8 skip 1 ch-1 space instead of 2 along the row to adjust the stitch count.

Finishing

Block the shawl.
