Fall Leaf Stole

Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

I wanted to make a stole for the Fall. Something that would reflect the spirit of the season. I used brown for the main body of the shawl, which features a more geometric lace motif. I did the border in a self-striping Noro (affiliate link) Kureyon yarn featuring Autumn colors. The border features a leaf motif. The contrast of the two yarns really adds interest to the stole.

The stole can be wrapped tightly for warmth, or draped loosely, allowing air to move freely through the lace mesh, so it's perfect for all-day wear in the Fall, when the days can be warm but the evenings cool.

The stole has a trapezoid shape. It's worked sideways, starting with the long edge and decreasing in every row to the short edge.

The border motif is worked in a somewhat unusual way: the entire border is technically only one row. I think the diagram and photos really helps with figuring this one out, even if you prefer written patterns.

Row 1 (foundation row): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in next ch, repeat to the end of the row.

Row 2: ch 5, skip 1, 1 sc into next dc, *ch 5, skip 3 dc, 1 sc into next dc, repeat from * to last 2 sts (1 dc and ch 3), end with ch 2, skip 1 dc, 1 dc into ch-3.

Row 3: ch 4, 3dccl into ch-2, ch 2, *1 sc into next ch-5, ch 2, (3dccl, ch 3, 3 dccl) into next ch-5, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the row, ch 2, 1 sc into ch-5.

Row 4: ch 3, 1 dc into ch-2, *ch 3, 1 sc into ch-3, ch 3, 2dccl (working 1st dc into next ch-2 and the 2nd dc into the next ch-2: 1 dc in each ch-2-space), repeat from * to the end of the row, end with ch 3, 1 sc into ch-4.

Stole

The stole is crocheted sideways from the long edge to the short edge with decreases at both ends. The leaf border is crocheted afterwards along the ends and short edge of the stole in contrasting yarn.

Chain 377.

Row 1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2dc-cl, 1 dc into each ch to the last 3 ch, 3dc-cl. Turn.

Row 2: ch 1, 1 sc into 3dc-cl, *ch 5, skip 3 dc, 1 sc into next dc, repeat from * to the end of the row, last sc into 2dc-cl. Turn.

Row 3: (1 sl st, ch 1, 1 sl st) in ch-5, *ch 2, (3dccl, ch 3, 3 dccl) into next ch-5, ch 2, 1 sc into next ch-5, repeat from * to the end of the row. Turn.

Row 4: ch 3, *1 sc in next ch-3, ch 3, 2dccl (working 1st dc into next ch-2 and the 2nd dc into the next ch-2: 1 dc in each ch-2-space), ch 3, from * repeat to the end of the row, ending with 1 sc into the last ch-3. Turn.

Row 5: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc-cl into next ch-3, 1 dc into same ch-3, *1 dc into the top of the next 2dccl, 3 dc into next ch-3, 1 dc into next sc, 3 dc in next ch-3, repeat from * to the last ch-3, 1 dc into the last ch-3, 3dc-cl into the same ch-3 and last 1 sc.

Row 6: ch 3, skip 3 dc, * 1 sc into next dc, ch 5, skip 3 dc, repeat from * the end of the row, last sc into the top of 2dc-cl. Turn.

Repeat rows 3-6 eight more times. End the last repeat on row 5. Cut off.

Secure the yarn to the beginning of the 1st row and work 1 row of dc along the short edges and shorter edge of the stole (first ch 3 counts as 1 dc). Without cutting the yarn continue to work 1 row of sc along the longer edge of the stole. Don’t tie off, continue to work border from the last st

Leaf Border

The border is worked along the ends and short edge of the stole. The border is, in fact, 1 row, where each leaf is crocheted back and forth completely and then another leaf is worked along the edge. The leaf is worked in sc. ALL sc are worked through the back loop. The border is worked with CCs.

Secure the yarn to ch-3 of the dc row, ch 1, 1 sc into next st.

Leaf

Row 1: ch 5, turn.

Row 2: ch 1, 1 sc into each of next 5 ch, turn.

Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc into each of next 5 sc, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: ch 1, 1 sc into each 2 ch, 1 sc into each of 5 sc, turn.

Row 5: ch 1, 1 sc into each of next 7 sc, ch 2, turn.

Row 6: ch 1, 1 sc into each 2 ch, 1 sc into each of 7 sc, turn.

Row 7: ch 1, 1 sc into each of next 9 sc, turn.

Row 8: ch 1, 1 sc into each of next 9 sc, rotate the leaf 90 degrees clockwise and work 1 sc in each of 3 ch-1 from rows 3, 5, 7, turn.

Row 9: ch 1, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, rotate the leaf 90 degrees counterclockwise and continue to work 1 sc in each of next 7 sc, turn.

Row 10: ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 7 sc, rotate the leaf 90 degrees clockwise and work 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. This is the end of the leaf.

Work 1 sc in each of next 4 dc along the edge of the stole, sl st to 7th sc (last before rotation), 1 sc into each of next 6 dc.

Next Leaf

Row 1: ch 5, sl st to ch-1 of the row 10 of the previous leaf.

Rows 2-10: repeat as first leaf.

Work the Leaf Border to the end of the opposite short end of the stole. Tie off.
