Free Cardigan Knitting Pattern
This cardigan features a lace motif in the yoke that gives it a "starburst" look. It matches perfectly with the Starburst Lace Yoke Sweater.
The cardigan is worked from the top down, back and forth, without seams. Stockinette stitch is used for the body of the cardigan. To ensure a flattering fit, the cardigan use darts in sizes M through 3X. It is also tapered to fit the hips using increases.
The sleeves are worked in the round on double pointed needles (dpn) or 16” circular needles.
I used a one-color yarn for this sweater, which I think works very well for this particular pattern. I haven't tried a self-striping yarn, but feel free to experiment.

Abbreviations:
st, sts - stitch, stitches
k – knit
p – purl
yo - yarn over
ssk - slip, slip knit. This is a left-slanting decrease.
k2tog - knit 2 tog. This is a right-slanting decrease.
s2kp2 - slip 2 sts as if to k2tog (knit 2 tog), k 1, p2sso (pass 2 slipped sts over). This is a centered double decrease
co - cast on
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
pu&k - pick up and knit
dpn – double-pointed needles
M1 (Make 1 increase) - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row knit (purl) it as a regular stitch.
w&t – wrap and turn
Cardigan
The cardigan is worked top-down, seamlessly, back and forth on circular needles. Sleeves are worked in the round on dpn.
Using bigger circular needles (16” or 21”), cast on 91 (91, 99, 99, 107, 107) sts using provisional cast-on method. Purl 1 row.
Yoke
The yoke is shaped by a number of increases. First, the increases are part of the lace pattern and are made with yarn overs in every pattern repeat. Then the increases are made between lace pattern repeats. There are NO increases before the first pattern repeat and after the last pattern repeat, at the front center.
Odd rows are RS.

Divide for sleeves and bodice:
Divide the stitches into the following portions:
40 (44, 48, 52, 58, 61) for the right front
41 (44, 53, 62, 66, 68) sts for the right sleeve
76 (87, 96, 103, 111, 119) sts for the back
41 (44, 53, 62, 66, 68) sts for the left sleeve
40 (44, 48, 52, 58, 61) for the left front
Place marker after each part.
Shaping the back neck:
Transfer back stitches to a separate needle, attach yarn from a separate skein and work 8 rows in stockinette back and forth.
Starting from the right front stitches, work RS row: work the right front sts (all knit), transfer the right sleeve stitches to a length of a waste yarn, cast on 14 (15, 17, 18, 20, 22) sts for the underarm, work back stitches (all knit) from a separate needle, transfer the left sleeve stitches to a length of a waste yarn, cast on 14 (15, 17, 18, 20, 22) sts for the underarm, work the left front stitches (all knit). Place markers in the middle of each underarm portion (if there is an uneven amount of stitches, place marker so there are more stitches in the front: i.e. if 15 sts, place marker between 7th and 8th sts, so that 7 sts are towards the back and 8 sts are towards the front).
Total number of stitches after division = 185 (205, 225, 243, 265, 285).
Bodice
Work 3 rows in stockinette st.

After right dart instructions
Next row: work stockinette st to the end of the row, picking up the wrap and working it together with the stitch it was wrapped around.
Work 50 rows in stockinette stitch.
Hip Shaping
Begin increases for the hip shaping: the increases are made by working M1 at the marker in the middle of the underarm stitches (side seam placement).
Increase at each marker for 1 st by working M1 (2 st per row) every 8th row, total 5 times. =195 (215, 235, 253, 275, 295) sts.
Work total 108 (110, 112, 112, 112, 112) rows from the armhole or to desired length, taking into consideration, that there is a 2.5” (6 cm) 1x1 rib.
Using smaller needles work 12 rows of 1 x 1 rib. Bind off.
Sleeve
Sleeves are worked in the round, on dpn or circular 16” (40 cm) needles. You can also use longer circular needles and “magic loop” method. Sleeves are worked in stockinette stitch in-the-round.
Transfer sts 41 (44, 53, 62, 66, 68) from a waste yarn to dpn, distribute the stitches evenly. Pick up and knit 14 (15, 17, 18, 20, 22) sts underarm. Mark the beginning of the row. = 55 (59, 70, 80, 86, 90) sts.
Work total 126 rows or to desired length, taking into consideration, that there is a 2.5” (6 cm) 1x1 rib. In the last row work k2tog to the end of the round, decreasing the amount of stitches in half. Since you need an even amount of stitches for the 1x1 rib, in sizes S and M skip one k2tog.
Using smaller needles work 12 rows of 1 x 1 rib. Bind off.
Finishing
Unravel the waste yarn from the neckline and transfer the stitches to a smaller circular needle. Work 6 rows in 1x1 rib. Bind off.
Button bands are worked in 1x1 rib from the bottom of the right front to neckline, and from the neckline to the bottom of the left front.
Mark the button placement on the right front. Pick up sts with circular needle along the center of the right front, you are supposed to pick up each chain selvedge loop as you are going to join the button band to the front at every other row. You don't need to pick up all the sts at a time, you can do this in batches.
Cast on 9 sts and work 1 x 1 rib to the last st. Work the last st and the first picked up st together as p2tog. Turn, work 1 x 1 rib. Continue to work the button band joining it every odd row to the front of the cardigan. For each button hole work yo, k2tog. Work the left button band in the same way, starting from the neckline and working to the bottom of the cardigan.
Weave in the ends of the yarn. Block the piece. Sew on the buttons.
Enjoy!
