Free Doll Dress Crochet Pattern
This lacy dress is perfect for the summer!
The dress features a yoke, hem and stripes in contrast color. The pattern also describes a matching headband.
I picked a neon color scheme, with a black main color and a bright variegated yarn for the contrast color. But of course you are free to use any other colors.
Skills Required/Techniques Used:
- Basic crochet stitches: chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc),
- Advanced crochet stitches: triple crochet (tr), treble treble crochet (TrTr), back post treble crochet (Bptr)
FINISHED SIZE: to fit 18-inch dolls, such as American Girl Doll, etc.
Materials: Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s Crochet thread Classic 10, 100% Mercerized Cotton, 350 yds - black 1 ball (MC), color 536 Passionata thread -1/5 ball (CC)
Hook: 1.5 mm OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.
Gauge: 7 dc = 1" (2.5 cm)
Notions:
- 5 sew-on snaps (4 for the dress, and 1 for the headband), size 2/0
- Tapestry needle to weave in yarn ends
- Stitch marker (optional) - for your convenience place the marker on the right side (RS) of the working piece, when working in rounds, place marker at the beginning of the round.
- Sewing needle and thread of matching color to attach snaps
Abbreviations:
st, sts - stitch, stitches
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
ch, chs - chain, chains
yo - yarn over
tr - treble crochet : stitch with 2 yarn overs (yo). If you never worked with tr, the following tutorial can be useful
TrTr - triple treble crochet/or treble treble crochet: stitch with yo 4 times. If you never worked with TrTr, the following tutorial can be useful

Short Overview of the Pattern:
The dress is worked top down, back and forth till hip line, with the opening on the back. Then the work is joined into round, and the skirt is worked in rounds.
Dress
Yoke
With MC (black) thread chain 50.
Row 1 (RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the 49 chains across. = 50 dc
Row 2: Attach CC thread and ch 5 with both threads, drop the MC thread and continue
with CC thread * TrTr, ch 1- repeart from * 47 times to last 2dc, TrTr in each of the last 2 dc = 97 sts
Row 3: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the 96 sts. = 97 sts
Cut CC thread, continue with the MC.
Row 4: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 11 dc, V-st in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 22 dc, V-st in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 25 dc, V-st in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 22 dc, V-st in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the last 12 dc. = 105 sts
Row 5: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 12 dc, V-st in ch-1-sp of V-st, 1 dc in each of the next 24 dc, V-st in ch-1-sp of V-st, 1 dc in each of the next 27 dc, V-st in ch-1-sp of V-st, 1 dc in each of the next 24 dc, V-st in ch-1-sp of V-st, 1 dc in each of the last 13 dc = 113 sts
Divide for sleeves and bodice:
Row 6: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) 1 dc in each of the next 14 sts, ch 10- skip 26 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 31 sts - ch 10, skip 26 dc, 1 dc in each of the last 15 sts = 81 sts
Row 7: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each 80 st across = 81 sts
Repeat row 7 five more times.
Row 13 (belt row): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *1 dc in the next dc, ch 1, skip next 1 dc - repeat from * 39 times till the last 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the last 2 dc.
Row 14 ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, *v-st in each ch-1-space - repeat from 39 times to last 2 dc, 1 dc in each of the last 2 dc =121 sts
Row 15/round1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, * W-st in each V-st- repeat from * 39 times to last 2 dc, overlap the last 2 sts with the first 2 sts of the row, work the first of the remaining dc, with sl st connect it with the first dc of the row, work the last dc, with the sl st connect it with the second dc of the row. The work is closed into round. =197 sts
Round 2: with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, drop black (MC) thread, attach CC thread. ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space, W-st in each of the 38 W-sts around, V-st between the last 2 dc. Join with sl.st. into the upper ch of the ch3 stitch.
Round 3: with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, drop CC thread, pick up MC thread. ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space, ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space, W-st in each 38 W-sts around, W-st in the last V-st. Join with sl.st. into the upper ch of the ch3 stitch
Round 4: with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space. ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space, W-st in each 39 W-sts around. Join with sl.st. into the upper ch of the ch3 stitch
Repeat round 4 nine more times, work rounds 5 and 8 with CC thread, all other rounds with black (MC) thread.
Round 14:with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space. ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space, *sc in the first dc of the next W-st, ch 5, sc in the last dc of the same W-st, W-st in the next W-st - repeat from * around till the last W-st, sc in the first dc of the last W-st, ch 5, 1 sc in the last dc of the same W-st. Join with sl.st. to the upper ch of the ch3 stitch.
Round 15: with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space. ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space,* 9 dc under the ch-5-space, W-st in W-st, repeat from * to the last ch-5-space, 9 dc under the last ch-5-space. Join with sl.st. to the upper ch of the ch3 stitch
Round 16: with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space. ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space,
* (1tr, ch1 in each if the next 8 dc, 1tr in the last dc, W-st in W-st - repeat around till the last 9dc, (1tr, ch1 in each if the next 8 dc, 1tr) in the last dc. Join with sl.st. to the upper ch of the ch3 stitch.
Cut black thread, attach CC thread in the ch-1-space of the first W-st.
Round 17: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space. ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space, *(1Bptr in the tr, ch 1) in each of the next 8 tr, 1 Bptr in the last tr, W-st in W-st - repeat from * around till the last group of tr (1Bptr in the tr, ch 1) in each of the next 8 tr, 1Bptr. Join with sl st to the upper st of ch-3.
Round 18: with 2 sl sts move to the ch-1-space of the first W-st, ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in ch-1 space. ch 1, 2 dc in the the same ch-1-space, *(1 tr, ch 1) in each of the next 8 tr, 1 tr, W-st in W-st - repeat from * around, till the last group of tr, (tr 1, ch 1) in each of the next 8 tr, tr 1, join with sl st.
Round 19: ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch around. Tie off. Cut thread.
Finishing:
Weave in all yarn ends. Sew the snaps on the edges formed by 2 sts in the beginning and end of each row.
Belt
With multi-colored thread chain a 15 inch long string, row 1: dc in each chain. tie off, cut thread. Tie black thread, make a round of sc in each st on all 4 sides of the belt, for better turn, make 3 sc in the corners.
Flower
With MC thread, ch6, join with sl st into 1st chain to form a ring.
Round 1: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 19 dc in the ring, join with sl st to the top of beginning ch-3. =20 dc. Cut MC thread, attach CC thread.
Round 2: ch1, *sc in the next st, ch 6, skip next 3 dc, repeat from * 4 more times, join with sl st to the first sc.
Round 3: *ch1, (sc, hdc, 6 dc, hdc, sc) in next ch-6-space, ch 1, sl st into the next sc, repeat from * 4 more times, join with sl st to the first sc. Tie off, cut thread.
Weave in all thread ends.
Head Band
Chain 9,
Row 1: insert the hook in the 6th chain from the hook, work 1 dc in each of the 4 chains,
Row 2: chain 5, 1 dc in each of the next 4 dc.
Work until a piece is 12" long. Check the fit on a doll's head. Sew on a snap.
Make a couple of flowers and sew on the headband.
