Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

The shawl consists of separate motifs: squares and triangles. The pattern offers flexibility in construction, allowing you to connect motifs as-you-go or assemble them later.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
- Basic crochet stitches: chain (ch), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr), double treble crochet (dtr)
- Advanced crochet stitches: 3dc-cluster (3dc-cl), 4dc-cluster (4dc-cl), 3tr-cluster (3tr-cl), 2tr-cluster (2tr-cl) (see abbreviations).

Materials: Brown Sheep (affiliate link) Lamb’s Pride Sport 100% wool sport weight yarn, 435 gr 1682 yrds/1538 m) – 1 cone

Abbreviations

ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
dtr = double treble crochet (3 yo)
hdc = half double crochet
3dc-cluster – (yo, insert the hook into the next st, yo, draw yarn through the st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops), repeat 2 more times, yo, draw yarn through all loops on the hook.
4dc-cluster – (yo, insert the hook into the next st, yo, draw yarn through the st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops), repeat 3 more times, yo, draw yarn through all loops on the hook.
3tr-cluster = (2 yo, insert the hook into the next st, yo, draw yarn through the st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops), repeat 2 more times, yo, draw yarn through all loops on the hook.

Short Overview of the pattern:

Shawl consists of 21 square motifs and 7 triangle motifs. The motifs are connected while working the last round of the motif. Alternatively, it is possible to sew all the motifs afterwards. To make bigger shawl just crochet more motifs.

Square Motif (worked in the rounds)

Chain 10, join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc), 23 dc into a ring, sl st to ch-4.



Round 2: ch 4 (counts as 1 sc and ch 3), skip 1 dc, 1 sc in next dc, (ch 3, skip 1 dc, 1 sc in next dc) repeat 11 times, sl st to ch-4.



Round 3: ch 9 (counts as 1 tr and ch 5), (3tr-cl in next ch-3-sp, ch 5) repeat 11 times, 2tr-cl in next ch-3-sp, sl st to 4th ch of ch-9.



Round 4: ch 1 (counts as 1 sc), (5 sc in next ch-5-sp) repeat 4 times, 6 sc in next ch-5-sp, (5 sc in next ch-5-sp) repeat 3 times, 6 sc in next ch-5-sp, (5 sc in next ch-5-sp) repeat 3 times, sl st to ch-1.



Round 5: ch 3 (counts as 1 sc and ch 2), skip 1 sc, (1 sc in next sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc) repeat 31 times, sl st to ch3.



Round 6: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 3dc-cl in next ch-2-sp, (ch 3, 4dc-cl in next ch-2-sp) repeat 31 times, ch 1, 1 hdc in the top of the 3dc-cl at the beg of the round.
