Chevron Jacket for 18-inch Doll

Free Doll Jacket Knitting Pattern

The jacket is knitted from the bottom up, first as one piece, then the back and the fronts are worked separately. There are set-in sleeves and double breasted button band.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off
-Increasing, decreasing
-Sewing knitted parts together
-Picking up stitches

Materials: Knit Picks (affiliate link) Palette 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 231 yards/50grams, Fingering weight, main color (MC) Marble Heather 1 ball and color A, contrast color (CC), Blush 1 ball (small amount of this yarn is needed)

Needles: US #1.5 (2.50mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge in garter stitch: 28 sts x 48 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

Notions:
-yarn needle
-stitch holder
-10 small buttons of matching the CC yarn color
-sewing thread and sewing needle to attach buttons

Abbreviations:
K – knit
P – purl
St – stitch
Sts - stitches
pu&k - pick up and knit
ssk – slip, slip, knit, results in a left-slanting decrease.
k2tog – knit 2 together, results in a right-slanting decrease.
cdd - center double decrease: 1) slip 2 sts on the right needle knitwise, 2) knit the next st, 3) insert the left needle in the slipped 2 sts and pass them over the just knitted stitch, results in 2 sts decrease.
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
MC – main color
CC- contrast color
bb – button band


Pattern Notes:

Garter Stitch:
All rows knit

Moss stitch:

multiple of 2 + 1
Row 1: k1, * p1, k1 - repeat from *
Repeat row 1.

Chevron Pattern:

multiple of 12 sts + 3 sts
Row 1 (decrease row): k 1, ssk, *k 9, cdd* repeat from * to the last 12 sts: k 9, k2tog, 1 k .
Row 2 (increase row): k 1, *p1, k 4, (k1, yo, k1) in the next st, k 4 *, repeat from * to the last 2 sts p1, k1.
Repeat rows 1 and 2.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last one.

Button Band (bb) is worked in moss stitch after the body of the jacket is finished.


Jacket

Cast on 89 sts (87 chevron + 2 edge)

Set up row (WS): knit 88, p1.

Row 1 (RS, decrease row): sl 1 (edge), k1, ssk, *k9, cdd - repeat from * 6 times, k9, k2tog, k1, p1 (edge). = 75 sts

Row 2: (WS, increase row): sl 1 (edge), k1, *p1, k4, (k1, yo, k1) in the next st, k4 - repeat from * 7 times, p1, k1, p1 (edge) = 89 sts

Repeat rows 1-2 seventeen times. Work rows 1-8 in main color (MC); rows 9-12 in contrast color (CC); rows 13-16 in MC, rows 17-20 in CC. Then continue in MC.

Row 33 (RS) repeat row 1 = 75 sts


Divide for 2 fronts and back:

Row 34 (WS) : sl 1, k1, p1, k9, p1, bind off 9 sts, p1, (k9, p1) 3 times, bind off 9 sts, p1, k9, p1, k1, p1.

Continue to work each part separately, for convenience, transfer the stitches of the back (31 sts) and left front (13 sts) to a stitch holder:


Right Front:

Row 35 (RS) : sl 1, k11, p1. (13 sts)
Row 36 (WS): sl 1, k9, p1, k1, p1.
Repeat rows 35-36 five more times.
Row 47 (RS, decrease row): sl 1, k1, ssk, k8, p1. ( =12 sts)
Row 48 (WS): sl 1, k8, p1, k1, p1.
Row 49 (RS, decrease row): sl 1, k1, ssk, k7, p1. ( = 11 sts)
Row 50 (WS): sl 1, k7, p1, k1, p1.
Row 51 (RS, decrease row): sl 1, k1, ssk, k6, p1. (= 10 sts)
Row 52 (WS): sl 1, k6, p1, k1, p1.
Row 53 (RS): sl 1, k8, p1.
Repeat rows 52-53 six more times, 65 rows in all. Bind off. Cut yarn.

Back:

Transfer the back sts (31 sts) from stitch holder to the left needle. With right side facing, attach yarn after the right armhole.
Row 35 (RS): k30, p1.
Row 36 (WS): sl 1, (k9, p1) x 3 times. Repeat rows 35-36 five times more.
Row 47 (RS): Repeat row 35. Bind off. Cut yarn.

Left front:

Transfer the left front sts (13 sts) from stitch holder to the left needle. With right side facing, attach yarn after the left armhole.
Row 35 (RS): sl 1, k11, p1.
Row 36 (WS): sl 1, k9, p1, k1, p1.
Repeat rows 35 and 36 five more times.
Row 47 (RS, decrease row): sl 1, k8, k2tog, k1, p1. (=12 sts)
Row 48 (WS): sl1, k1, p1, k8.
Row 49 (RS, decrease row): sl1, k7, k2tog, k1, p1. (=11 sts)
Row 50 (WS): sl 1, k1, p1, k7, p1.
Row 51 (RS): sl 1, k6, k2tog, k1, p1. (= 10 sts)
Row 52 (WS): sl 1, k1, p1, k6, p1.
Row 53 (RS): sl 1, k8, p1.
Repeat rows 52-53 six more times. Bind off. Cut yarn.

Join shoulder seams. Note that the shoulder seams are not in the middle of the shoulder, but shifted to the back. Weave in yarn ends.

Button Bands (BB):

With the right side facing, pu&k 35 sts along the right front edge for the right button band.
Work 7 rows in moss stitch: sl 1, k1 ,*p1, k1 - repeat from * to last st, p1.
Row 8 (making buttonholes): sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog, work 5 sts in moss stitch) x 4 times, yo, k2tog, 2 sts in moss stitch, p1.
Rows 9-12 work moss stitch as established. Bind off. Cut yarn.

For the left button band, pick up 35 sts along the left front edge and work moss stitch pattern for 8 rows. Bind off. Cut yarn.


Sleeve:

Cast on 41 sts.
Foundation (WS) row: knit.
Row 1 (RS, decrease row): sl1, k 1, ssk, (k 9, cdd) twice, k 9, k2tog, 1 k, p1. (= 35 sts)
Row 2 (increase row): sl1, k 1, *p1, k 4, (k1, yo, k1) in the next st, k 4, repeat from * to the last 3 sts p1, k1, p1. (=41 sts)
Repeat rows 1-2 twelve times, working rows 9-12 in contrast color, the rest in main color.
Row 25 (RS, decrease row): repeat row 1. (= 35 sts)
Row 26 (WS): sl 1, k1, (p1, k9) x 3 times, p1, k1, p1 (= 35 sts)
Row 27 (RS): sl 1, k 33, p1.
Row 28 (WS): repeat row 26.
Row 29 (RS, decrease row): bind off 3, k 30, p1. (= 32 sts)
Row 30 (WS, decrease row): bind off 3, k7, p1, k9, p1, k8, p1. (= 29 sts)
Row 31 (RS, decrease row): bind off 1, k26, p1. (= 28 sts)
Row 32 (WS, decrease row): bind off 1, k7, p1, k9, p1, k7, p1. (= 27 sts)

Row 45 (RS, decrease row): bind off 1, k22, p1. (= 24 sts)
Row 46 (WS, decrease row): bind off 1, k5, p1, k9, p1, k5, p1. (= 23 sts)
Row 47 (RS, decrease row): bind off 1, k20, p1. (= 22 sts)
Row 48 (WS, decrease row): bind off 1, k4, p1, k9, p1, k4, p1. (= 21 sts)
Row 49 (RS, decrease row): bind off 1, k18, p1. (= 20 sts)
Row 50 (WS, decrease row): bind off 1, k3, p1, k9, p1, k3, p1. (= 19 sts)
Bind off. Cut yarn. Weave in all yarn ends. Make another sleeve.


Neck Band:

Pick up and knit 50 sts along the neck line, including the button bands.

Work 8 rows of 1x1 rib. Bind off. Cut yarn. Weave in yarn ends.


Finishing

Sew in the sleeves. Sew on a row of buttons of the left button band under the buttonholes. Sew a parallel row of 5 buttons on the right button band.

I have finished the little chevron jacket but am clueless how to sew in the sleeves. Could you please explain. There are 11 stitches cast off in the sleeve area on the jacket and this is where I do not know how to incorporate the stitches into the sleeve. Thank you. Diane
