I made this hat a few years ago for my son. The first one I made came out really small. Some changes I made: I used size 9 needles,(I am a tight knitter, so size 8 would probably work for others), and I added 6 more rows after round 26. This has remained his favorite. Hope this info helps someone!

If you have knit caps in cotton that don't fit the intended wearer you might bring them to a chemo center. They always appreciate them and size doesn't matter. Usually there is a box and patients just try on 'til they find one that fits. If you have a friend in chemo offer to make one for them. Use soft cotton yarn.

Worsted weight yarn requires size 8 (US) needles to get the correct gauge, so your suggestion is right on.

I knit this hat 2 times. I found I had to use size 8 circular needles for it to fit my 12 year old grandson and my adult son. I tend to knit in a slightly tight tension but it worked very on this pattern. Try a size 8 and may help you.

Regret that I agree the needle size 5 or 6 even with worsted weight seems to produce a smaller version of actual hat size for adult. I am a relatively loose knitter tension and will now try a size 7. Will let you know outcome. Ann

Boy, my knitting must be REALLY off - when I knit this pattern using worsted weight and size 4 needles I get a hat that will fit a baby about 4 to 6 months old and using size 6 needles I get a hat that will fit a one year old... My guage doesn't usually vary so much as it does with this pattern. :(
