Pipe Dream Hat

Free Hat Knitting Pattern

I know my name for this one isn't super-original :) I named it for the horizontal "piping" texture.

This seamless 2-color hat is worked in the rounds, from the bottom up.

This hat is actually very easy to make. There is also a matching Pipe Dream Scarf.

Sizes: One Size

Finished Measurements: will stretch to fit head circumference of 21¼–22½”

-Working in the round on circular needles, and on double pointed needles/or magic loop technique

Materials: KnitPicks Shamrock aran weight wool yarn 82 yards (75 meters) / 50 g color Kavanagh - 1 ball (color B)
Lion Wool aran weight yarn 158 yards (144 meters) / 85 grams color Ebony - 1 ball (color A)

Needles: US #6 (4mm) / 20" (51 cm) circular needles, US #7 (4.5 mm) / 20" (51 cm) circular needles and a set of size US #7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles (dpn), OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge in stockinette stitch: 14 st x 20 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm)

Abbreviations:
dpn – double pointed needles
K – knit
P – purl
St – stitch
Sts – stitches
k2tog –knit 2 sts together
m 1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit it as a regular stitch.


Pattern Notes:

Stockinette Stitch in rounds: All rounds knit.

Reverse Stockinette Stitch in rounds: All rounds purl

1x1 Rib in rounds (multiple on 2): All rounds *1p, 1k* repeat to the end


Hat

Hat is worked in rounds, seamlessly, first on circular needles, then on dpn, or using the magic loop technique.

Using circular needles US#6 (4 mm), color A yarn, cast on 80 sts, join and continue working in rounds. Place the marker at the beginning of the round, slip marker while working.

Work rib for 8 rounds.

Round 9: *k8, m1 – repeat from * 10 times. (=90 sts).

Change to needles US#7 (4.5 mm)
Round 10: knit

Round 11 (with color B) : knit

Rounds 12, 13, 14, 15 with color B: purl

Rounds 16, 17, 18 with color A: knit

Repeat rounds 11-18 three more times, repeat round 11-15 one more time.


Crown Shaping

Round 48 (decrease) with color A: * K1, k2tog – repeat from * 30 times. (= 60 sts)

Rounds 49, 50 with color A: knit

Round 51 with color B: knit

Rounds 52- 55, with color B: purl

Transfer the sts to dpn, distribute evenly. Change to color A, which will be the working color to the end of the work.

Round 56 (decrease round): *k1, k2tog – repeat from * 20 times. (=40 sts)

Round 57: knit

Round 58 (decrease round): *k1, k2tog – repeat from * 13 times, k1. (=27 sts)

Round 59: knit

Round 60 (decrease round): *k1, k2tog – repeat from * 7 times, k1, k2tog twice. (= 17 sts)

Round 61: knit

Round 62 (decrease round): *k1, k2tog – repeat from * 6 times (=12 sts)

Round 63: knit

Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through all the sts and secure.


Finishing: weave in all yarn ends.
