Sleeveless Wrap Top with Applied I-Cord for 18-inch Doll

Free Doll Top Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing: yarn over (YO)

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk)

-Working an I-cord and applied I-cord

Materials: Paton (affiliate link)s Grace 100% cotton sport weight yarn, 136 yards (124 meters)/50 g, color 60104 - 1 ball (A)
Paton (affiliate link)s Grace 100% cotton sport weight yarn, 136 yards (124 meters)/50 g, color 60903 - 1 ball (B)

Notions: yarn needle

Needles: #4 (3.50 mm) and double pointed #2 (2.27mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for stockinette stitch: 22 sts x 28 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm)

Abbreviations:

dpn – double pointed needles

K – knit

P – purl

St, sts – stitch, stitches

k2tog - knit 2 sts together, right slanted decrease

ssk - sli-slip-knit, left slanted decrease

co – cast on

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

Pattern Notes:

Stockinette Stitch
Row 1 (RS): knit

Row 2 (WS): purl

Repeat rows 1-2.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last one.


Directions:

Top is worked as one piece from bottom to top, with shoulder seams. Shoulder seams are slightly drawn back.

With yarn A cast on 75 sts
Row 1 (RS): sl 1, k 73, p1
Row 2 (WS): sl 1, p 74
Row 3 (RS): sl1, ssk, k17, yo, k2tog, k50, k2tog, p1. (= 73 sts)
Row 4: sl1, purl to the end of the row.
Row 5 (RS): sl1, ssk, k67, k2tog, p1. (=71 srs)
Row 6: sl1, purl to the end of the row.
Row 7 (RS): sl1, ssk, k65, k2 tog, p1. (=69 sts)
Row 8: sl1, purl to the end of the row.
Row 9 (RS): sl1, ssk, k63, k2tog, p1. (=67 sts)
Row 10: sl1, purl to the end of the row
Row 11 (RS): sl1, ssk, k15, bind off 4 sts, k23, bind off 4 sts, k15, k2tog, p1.
You divided the work into 3 portions: 17 sts - 23 sts - 17 sts
You can continue the work from 3 balls of yarn, or work one portion at a time.

Left front:
Row 12: sl1, purl 16 (until bound-off section);
Row 13: Sl1, k13, k2tog, p1. (=16 sts)
Row 14: sl1, p15.
Row 15: sl1, k12, k2tog, p1. (=15 sts)
Row 16: sl1, p14.
Row 17: sl1, k11, k2rog, p1. (=14 sts)
Row 18: sl1, p 13.
Row 19: sl1, k10, k2tog, p1. (=13 sts)
Row 20: sl1, p12.
Row 21: sl1, k9, k2tog, p1. (=12 sts)
Row 22: sl1, p11.
Row 23: sl1, k8, k2tog, p1. (=11 sts)
Row 24: sl1, p10.
Row 25: sl1, k7, k2tog, p1. (=10 sts)
Row 26: sl1, p9.
Row 27: sl1, k6, k2tog, p1. (=9 sts)
Row 28: sl1, p8.
Row 29: sl1, k5, k2tog, p1. (=8 sts)
Row 30, sl1, p7.
Row 31, sl1, k6, p1.
Row 32; sl1, p7.
Bind off.

Back:
Row 12 (WS and all WS rows): sl 1, purl 22 (until the next bind off).
Row 13 (RS and all RS rows): sl 1, k 21, p1.
Repeat rows 12 and 13 seven more times, repeat row 12 one more time. Bind off.

Right Front:
Row 12: sl1, p16;
Row 13: sl1, ssk, k13, p1. (=16 sts)
Row 14: sl1, p 15.
Row 15: sl1, ssk, k12, p1. (=15 sts)
Row 16: sl1, p14.
Row 17: sl1, ssk, k11, p1. (=14 sts)
Row 18: sl1, p13.
Row 19: sl1, ssk, k10, p1. (=13 sts)
Row 20: sl1, p12.
Row 21: sl1, ssk, k9, p1. (=12 sts)
Row 22: sl1, p 11.
Row 23: sl1, ssk, k8, p1. (=11 sts)
Row 24: sl1, p10.
Row 25: sl1, ssk, k7, p1. (=10 sts)
Row 26: sl1, p9.
Row 27: sl1, ssk, k6, p1. (=9 sts)
Row 28: sl1, p8.
Row 29: sl1, ssk, k5, p1. (=8 sts)
Row 30: sl1, p7.
Row 31, sl1, k6, p1.
Row 32: sl1, p7.
Bind off

Finishing
Block.
Fold the top, right side inwards, align the shoulder edges and sew them together. Please note that shoulder seams are darwn backwards.
With yarn B work a 4-stitch applied I-cord along the armholes. Sew the ends.
Work a 6" (15 cm) piece of I-cord, then continue to work it as an applied I-cord along the right front, the neckline, left front edges; finish with 10" (25 cm) piece of I-cord. Bind off.

The neckline and the armholes of the top are finished with applied I-cord. Please see video instructions below.

Do you need to add the I-chord? I would like to make this and add sleeves, to make a sweater wrap. Do I need to add the extra stitches the I-chord needs to the pattern, or just add sleeves? Thank You...

This video was excellent! I have done I-cords - but never attached them to a garment - mostly I used the I-cord as a purse handle or as ties. I love the finish this gives.
