Free Backpack Crochet Pattern
Materials: 3-ply (light fingering) cotton or linen yarn 175 yds (160 m) / 2 oz (57 g) 3 balls color (A), 2 balls color (B), 1 ball color (C), scraps of yarn of 3-4 different colors for the centers of the 3D flowers (D).
Suggested yarn: Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s 100% Mercerized Cotton, Size 3, 150yd/138m
Hook: 1 (2.25 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
Gauge: 13 dc x 8 rows = 2" x 2" (5 cm x 5 cm)
3D Flower Motif
With yarn D chain 12, join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: ch 1, 18 sc into ring, sl st to first sc (18 sts).
Round 2: ch 1, beginning into the same st as ch 1 (1 sc, ch 3, skip 2 sts) repeat 6 times, sl st to 1st sc.
Round 3: ch 1, work a petal of (1 sc, ch 2, 5 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) into each of next six ch 3 arches, sl st to 1st sc.
Round 4: ch 1, (1 sc btw two sc, ch 5 behind the petal of the 3rd round) repeat 6 times, sl st to 1st sc.
Round 5: with yarn C ch 1, work a petal of (1 sc, ch 3, 7 tr, ch 3, 1 sc) into each of next six ch-5 arches, sl st to 1st sc.
Round 6: ch 1, (1 sc btw two sc, ch 6 behind the petal of 5th round) 6 times, sl st to 1st sc.
Round 7: with yarn B, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *(4 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) into the same ch-6 arch, 6 dc into next ch-6 arch, (2 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) into next arch**, 1 dc into next arch, repeat from * to **, sl st to top of ch 3.
Round 8: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each dc all round with (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into each ch-2 corner space, ending sl st to top of ch 3.
Round 9: same as round 8. Tie off.
Starting from the second motif, join the motifs together while working the last round to form a strip. Join each dc with corresponding dc of the first motif as follows: yarn over the hook, insert the hook into the work, yo and draw through the work only, yo and draw through the first 2 loops only, insert the hook into the dc of the first motif, yo and draw the loop, you now have 3 loops on the hook, yo and draw through all loops on the hook.
Repeat to the corner of the motif.
Directions:
Crochet 8 motifs (see instructions above), connecting them together while working the last round and connecting the last motif to the first to make a circle. Set aside.
Bottom
With yarn A, ch 5, join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: ch 3 (count as 1 dc), 11 dc, sl st to to top of ch 3. (12 sts)
Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the same st, 2 dc into each dc, sl st to top of ch 3 (24 sts)
Round 3: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the same st, *1 dc, 2 dc into next dc*, repeat to the end of the round, sl st tp top of ch 3 (36 sts)
Round 4: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the same st, *2 dc, 2 dc into next dc*, repeat to the end of the round, sl st tp top of ch 3 (48 sts)
Rounds 5-15: continue to work as round 4 increasing for 12 dc in each round ending with 180 sts. Tie off. Set aside.
With yarn B work 1 round of back post dc along the motif circle.
Work 2 rounds of dc.
Change to yarn A and work 17 round of dc. Align the bottom of the backpack with the main part and connect bottom to the main part of the backpack with 1 round of sc. Tie off.
With yarn B work one round of back post dc and 2 round of dc.
Change to yarn A and work 12 rounds of dc.
Make eyelets in the next round by crocheting (1 dc, ch 1, skip 1 st, 3 dc) to the end of the round. Work 1 more round of dc. Do NOT cut the yarn.
Straps
Turn the work and crochet ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 7 dc. Turn. Continue to work strap of 8 dc until desired length. Tie off. Start another strap next to the 1st strap, skipping 2 st. Crochet second strap the same length, tie off.
Finishing.
With yarn B crochet 1 row of single crochet along the bottom seam attaching the ends of the straps, along the top of the back pack and both sides of each strap. Crochet a chain drawstring and thread into the eyelet row.
