Directions

The cardigan is worked from top to bottom, back and forth without seams.

Cast on 42 (42, 46, 54, 58) sts and purl one row (wrong side). Divide sts as follows and place
markers on raglan lines: 1st (selvedge) + 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) st (front) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) sts (sleeve) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 12 (12, 14, 16, 18) sts (back) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) sts (sleeve) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 4 (4, 5, 6, 7) st (front) +1 st (selvedge).
Work stockinette - all even rows purl (wrong side), all odd rows knit (right side) - for 36 (40, 44,
48, 52) rows increasing by 8 sts (double increase at the raglan sts) in each odd row as follows:
M1, k1 (raglan st), M1 at the raglan st. Work cable at the center of each sleeve as follows: k 1, p
1, k 4 (cable on 4 sts), p 1, k 1 = 8 st.

Divide for sleeves

Row 37 (41, 45, 49, 53): work the left front sts, transfer the left sleeve sts to a length of yarn,
cast on 5 sts with single cast on for the underarm, work back sts, transfer right sleeve sts to a
length of yarn, cast on 5 sts with single cast on and work right front stitches.

Continue to work bodice in stockinette back and forth for 38 (42, 48, 54, 60) more rows or until
desired length.

Work 8 rows of garter stitch. Work the first row of garter as follows: *k 4, k2tog (knit 2 together), repeat to the end of the row.
Cast off.

Sleeve

Sleeves are worked in rounds.
Transfer sleeve sts from the yarn to the needles and pick up 5 sts over the 5 underarm sts.
Place a marker at the beginning of the round.
Work 42 (48, 54, 60, 66) rounds or to desired length. To shape the sleeve, work k3tog (knit 3
together) at marker in every 6th round, 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) times.
Work 8 rows of garter stitch. Work the first row of garter as follows: *k 4, k2tog (knit 2 together), repeat to the end of the round.

Cast off.

I am starting this pattern. After purling the first row, I am stuck. I have never used these kind of stitches, and wondering if anyone can help get me started. For now, I am using for a size 6. Please, I need help. This is so confusing.

Hello, what is the stitch count after part 1? Before we start on the sleeves. I don’t seem to have ‘seems’ where the raglan is increased, and I’m wondering if I did it wrong.
I looped 1stitch on either side of raglan stitch and simply purled it on the way back. I didn’t knit and purl into it. Help! ; )

I found this top much easier to make by doing the sleeves on two needles, before completing the body of the garment. True it means sewing the sleeve seams, but it prevents that confusion as to how many rows between cables, especially when choosing to do a larger cable when making the larger size or using a finer woollen yarn.

The set up row is confusing. Could you please clarify the section regarding dividing the stitches and placing the markers for the raglan lines.

I am very confused regarding the setup row and the number of stitches being divided. Can you simplify it,please?
Thanks, Christine

Hi Christine, divide as follows for the set up row:

Knit 7 place marker (pm) for the front
Knit 8 pm for the sleeves
Knit 12 pm for the back
Knit 8 pm for sleeve
Knit 7 pm for the front

I used these numbers and it worked wonderfully. Please post a reply if you're still having trouble and I'll see if I can help out.
