Cardigan

The cardigan is worked from top to bottom, back and forth without seams.

Cast on 42 (47, 49, 52, 53, 57, 58, 63) sts and purl one row (wrong side). Divide sts as follows and place markers on raglan lines:
1st (selvedge) + 1 st (front) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11) sts (sleeve) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 20 (23, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 33) sts (back) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11) sts (sleeve) + 1 st (raglan, place a marker) + 1 st (front) + 1 st (selvedge)
Work Eyelet Mesh pattern for 30 rows. From row 31 work Eyelet Stripe pattern.

Work 28 (28, 34, 40, 42, 38, 36, 36) rows increasing by 8 sts (double increase at the raglan sts) in each odd row as follows: M1, k1 (raglan st), M1 at the raglan st.

For another 28 (32, 32, 32, 34, 44, 52, 56) rows, continue to increase back and fronts at raglan lines in each odd row. For the sleeves, increase in every 4th row 7 (8, 8, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14) times.

At the same time increase by 1 st at the beginning and the end of the row (2 sts per row)in every 6th row 8 (8, 9, 12, 12, 13, 2, 14) times and in every 4th row 2 (3, 3, 0, 1, 1, 12, 2) times.

Stitch count before division for sleeves: 258 (276, 306, 333, 349, 368, 386, 408).

Divide for sleeves
Row 57 (61, 67, 73, 77, 83, 89, 93): work the left front sts, transfer the left sleeve sts to a length of yarn, cast on 5 (7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 20) sts with single cast on for the underarm, work back sts, transfer right sleeve sts to a length of yarn, cast on 5 (7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 20) sts with single cast on and work right front stitches. Include raglan sts with the fronts and back. Place markers at the center of the underarm. Starting from the 6th row after division increase for 1 st at the markers (2 sts per row) in every 6th row 10 times.

Continue to work bodice back and forth in Eyelet Stripe pattern for 84 (86, 86, 84, 86, 86, 86, 84) more rows. Work 36 more rows in Eyelet Mesh pattern. Work 8 rows of garter stitch. Bind off.

Sleeve

Sleeves are worked in rounds in Eyelet stripe pattern.

Transfer sleeve sts from the yarn to the needles and pick up 5 (7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 20) sts over the 5 (7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 20) underarm sts. Place a marker at the beginning of the round.

Work 24 rounds or to desired length. Work 8 rounds of garter stitch. Bind off.

Finishing

Button bands and neck band are worked in rib 1x1 continuously from the bottom of the right front, to neckline, to left front and end at the bottom of the left front.

Mark the button placement on the right front. Pick up sts with circular needle along the center of the right front (you are supposed to pick up each chain selvedge loop as you are going to join the button band to the front at every other row). You don't need to pick up all the sts, you can do this in batches.

Cast on 9 sts and work rib 1x1 to the last st. Work the last st and the first picked up st together as p2tog. Turn, work rib 1x1. Continue to work the button band joining it every odd row to the front of the cardigan. When picking up sts at the neckline, pick up every other st of the cast on sts. Continue to left front. For each button hole work yo, k2tog.

Enjoy!

A question about the button band. I understand picking up the selvedge stitches, but I don't understand why/when to cast on the 9 stitches in the final paragraph. Please help!
