Post Stitch Dress for 6-inch Doll

Free Doll Dress Crochet Pattern

These dresses for the AGD Mini are pretty simple to crochet. The post-stitches create a distinctive and eye-catching texture. You can crochet the dresses without sleeves for a more modern look, or add sleeves for a more vintage style.

I worked small beads into the crochet for that extra sparkle.


Skills Required/Techniques Used:
-Chain

Materials: Crochet mercerized cotton thread #20 (we used Omega (affiliate link), and DMC (affiliate link) Cebelia) or Pearl Cotton embroidery thread # 8

Hook: steel hook 1 mm

Notions:
2-3 sew-on metallic snaps size 4/0, sewing needle and thread of color matching the crochet thread for attaching snaps,
Optional: any small embellishments, such as seed beads, crystals, silk flowers, etc.

Gauge: 10 dc x 5 rows = 1” x 1” (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm)

Size information: The dress will fit 6-inch dolls, such as mini American Girl Doll.

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
sc - single crochet
BPdc - back post double crochet
FPdc - front post double crochet
RS - right side
WS - wrong side


Dress

The dress is worked top-down in one piece, first back-and-forth, then in the round. Alternatively, you can work the dress back-and-forth and then sew up the back seam from hem to hip line. You can crochet the dress in one or two colors. The contrast color is used at the hem, sleeves and neck.

Yoke

Chain 26.

Row 1 (WS): ch 1, 1 sc in each chain across = 26 sts Turn.

Row 2(RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 sc, *2dc in the next sc, 1 dc in the next sc - repeat from * 5 times, * 1 dc in the next sc, 2 dc in the next sc - repeat from * 5 times, 1 dc in each of the last 3 sc. = 36 sts Turn.

Row 3 (WS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 4 dc, *2dc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc - repeat from * 4 times, 2 dc in each of the next 2 dc, *1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc the next dc - repeat from * 4 times, 1 dc in each of the last 5 dc. = 46 sts Turn.


Divide for sleeves and bodice:

Row 4 (RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, ch 3, skip the next 8 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 14 dc, ch 3, skip the next 8 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 8 dc. = 36 sts

Row 5 (WS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st - repeat from * 7 times, *1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st - repeat from * 7 times, 1 dc in each of the last 4 dc.

Note that underarm chain is worked: 2 dc in the first, 1 dc in the second, 2 dc in the third chain. =50 sts Turn.

Row 6 (RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, *FPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc - repeat from * 7 times, FPdc in the next dc, ch 1, *FPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc - repeat from * 8 times, 1 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Row 7 (WS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, *BPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc - repeat from * 7 times, BPdc in the next dc, 1dc in the ch -1-space, *BPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc - repeat from * 8 times, 1 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Closing the work into round:

Row 10/round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, *FPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc - repeat from * 15 times, FPdc in the next dc; fold the dress with RS facing and overlap the button bands (3 sts in the beginning and 3 sts in the end of the row), work 1 dc in the next dc in the row, connect with a slip stitch into the upper chain of the right button band, work 1 dc in the next dc in the row, connect with the slip stitch with the second dc of the right button band, work 1 dc in the last dc of the left button band, connect it with a slip stitch to the third dc of the right button band. Thus you close the work into a round. Alternatively, you can continue in rows, with 3 dc in the beginning and 3 dc in the end of each row forming a button band.

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *FPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc - repeat from * 16 times, 1 dc in each of the last 2 dc, connect with slip stitch.

Round 3: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *FPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the next dc, 1 dc in the next dc - repeat from * 16 times, 1 dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the last dc, connect with slip stitch.

Rounds 4--6: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *FPdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 4 dc - repeat from * 16 times, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc, connect with slip stitch.

Round 7: ch 2 (counts as 1 sc, 1 sc in each stitch across, join with slip stitch.

Round 8: ch 1, sc in the same sc, *ch 4, skip 4 sc, 1 sc in the next sc - repeat from * to the end of the round, join with slip stitch.

Round 9: ch 1, sc in the same sc, *6 dc under the ch-4-space, 1 sc in the next sc - repeat from * to the end of the round, join with slip stitch. Tie off.


Sleeves

You can leave the dress sleeveless (like the pink and white dresses in the photos), or add fly sleeves (as on the burgundy dress).

Fasten thread underarm, work 3 sc underarm, then work 2 dc in each stitch across, turn and work 1 sc in each dc across. Tie off.


Finishing

Weave in the ends. Embellish the dresses with embroidery, beads or small flowers.
