Easy Breezy Bias Hat

Difficulty level: ** Easy

Free Hat Knitting Pattern

This hat is fun and easy to knit, while the diagonal striping gives it a touch of modern style. It's perfect for the Fall and Winter.

The hat is knitted/worked sideways on a bias, in garter stitch. It features a rear seam. The crown is shaped with short rows. The size can be easily adjusted. This hat looks better if knit with self-striping yarn with short color changes, such as Noro (affiliate link) or similar.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off
-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog)
-Increasing: make 1 (m1)
-Short rows

Size: Hat circumference is 19 1/2" (50 cm) unstretched; hat stretches to fit most adult heads
Height from edge of brim to top center of crown is 11" (27 cm)

Materials: Katia (affiliate link) Azteca aran weight yarn (53% Wool, 47% Acrylic), 197 yards(180 meters) / 100 gr – 2 balls, color 7845

Needles: straight US 8 (5.0 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 14 sts x 30 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) in garter st.

Notions:
- Yarn/tapestry needle
- Stitch marker

Abbreviations:
K – knit
P – purl
k2tog - knit 2 sts together
St, sts – stitch, stitches
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
w&t – wrap and turn
m1 - - (Make 1 increase) - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row knit (purl) it as a regular stitch.
p2sso - Slip 2 stitches together, k1, then pass slipped stitches over

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked here as follows: slip the first stitch and purl the last one.

Wrap and turn in the short rows:
With yarn in front sl 1 stitch to the right needle
Move yarn between the needles to the back
Slip the stitch back to the left needle
Turn the work and bring yarn back to the wrong side between the needles.

Short Overview of the Pattern:

The hat is knitted sideways on a bias, in garter stitch. The hat begins from 3 st, then the increases are worked in every right side row, until the required number of sts is reached. Then the hat is worked as established, with increases at the beginning of the row and decreases at the end of the right side rows. The crown is shaped with short rows. The size can be easily adjusted. When the bottom edge is 19” (48 cm) the stitches are decreased by working k2tog at the beginning and the end of the row. The decreases are worked until there are 3 sts left. Place the stitch marker to mark the right side of the hat.

Finishing

Fold the sides of the hat with right side to right side. Sew them together, starting from the top of the hat. Stop 3” (7.5 cm) from the bottom edge. Turn the hat right side out and finish sewing, this time on the outside of the hat. This is the brim portion that will be folded up, so the seam will not be visible

Weave in yarn ends.

Have fun!
