Crescent Doll Shawl

Free Doll Shawl Knitting Pattern

The Crescent Doll Shawl is a top-down design featuring a crescent shape, combining garter stitch in black with stockinette stitch in shades of orange. The shawl is shaped through decreases at the beginning and end of each right-side row and increases between markers on contrast color rows. The final garter stitch stripe is added by picking up stitches along the edges and knitting them to complete the shawl's border.

Needles: US #2 (2.75mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 22 sts x 32 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette st.

Notions:
yarn needle, 2 stitch markers.

Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
ssk – slip slip knit
pu&k- pick up and knit
m1 - make 1 increase - make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
sm - slip marker
pm - place marker


Pattern Notes:

Stockinette in rows:
Row 1 (RS): knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat 2 rows.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch and knit the last one.


Short Overview of the Pattern:

The shawl is worked from the top down, in garter st (MC) and stockinette st (CCs). The shawl is shaped by the decreases at the beginning and the end of each RS row and the increases (m1) in the 1st row of the CC1 and CC2 between the markers. The last garter stitch stripe is worked from the right edge on the RS of the shawl by pu&k, through the center of the existing sts and along pu&k along the left edge of the shawl.


Shawl

With MC yarn cast on 90 sts and knit 1 foundation row: k34, pm, k22, pm, k34.

Row 1 (RS): sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (88 sts)

Row 2 (WS): sl 1, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 1-2 two more times. (84 sts).

With CC1 yarn:

Row 7: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the 1 st marker, sm, (k2, m1) repeat to the 2nd marker, sm, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (93 sts)

Row 8: sl1, purl to the end of the row.

Row 9: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (91 sts)

Row 10: sl1, purl to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 9-10 two more times. (87 sts).

With MC yarn:

Row 15: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (85 sts)

Row 16: sl 1, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 15-16 three more times. (79 sts).

With CC2 yarn:

Row 23: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the 1 st marker, sm, (k2, m1, k1, m1) repeat to the 2nd marker, sm, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (99 sts).

Row 24: sl1, purl to the end of the row.

Row 25: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (97 sts)

Row 26: sl1, purl to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 25-26 two more times. (93 sts).

With MC yarn:

Row 31: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (91 sts)

Row 32: sl 1, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 31-32 three more times. (85 sts)

With CC3 yarn:

Row 39: sl1, k1, ssk, knit to the last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. (83 sts)

Row 40: sl1, purl to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 39-40 three more times. (77 sts)

With MC yarn:

Row 47: with RS facing, starting at the beginning of the 1st row of the shawl pu&k 34 sts along the side edge up to the 1st st on the needle, knit the 77 stitches on the left needle, pu&k 34 sts along the other edge of the shawl up to the last st of the 1st row. (145 sts)

Row 48: sl 1, knit to the end of the row.

Row 49: sl1, m1, knit to the last st, m1, k1. (147 sts)

Row 50: sl 1, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 49-50 two more times. (151 sts).

Bind off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block.
