The numbers do add up if you understand that the salve stitches are NOT included in the pattern and row 2 is just a purl row. If you are having difficulty from row 2 on, this may not be the pattern for you. The pattern does tell you to cast off, you appear to be blaming the designer for your limited skills at reading a pattern, that's not fair. I recently made this for an outdoor wedding I am attending in May and it is gorgeous.
