My sister and I have done a lot of clothes for American girl dolls. Their waist is about 11 inches around, this pattern has 51 stitches for the waist. 51 sts. divided by 11 in. = about 4.5, so use whatever size needles would give you 4.5 stitches per inch. (I think for my sister and I that would be about size 6.)
