Yes, you could,but don't forget to add a selvedge stitch at each edge, for sewing up later. But give circulars a try! the most important thing to remember is to make sure the stitches aren't twisted before you join. I lay my cast-on on a flat surface, pull the stitches to the outside, and join. Good luck either way.
