Free Knitting and Crochet Patterns from Elaine Phillips

I love this pattern for my little 2 year old grandson but have never knitted a sweater.Do I need to use 2 strands of yarn or can I use a thicker yarn? Where can I find assistance with using circular needles which I gather is necessary for this pattern? Thankyou for sharing this pattern. I live in Australia. Pauline
