Hello Pauline, I am knitting this jumper for one of my grandsons. I this k the yarn is 4ply so doubled up makes an aran weight. I am using an aran yarn so using single strand.
The sweater is knitted back & forth, not in circles so if you are making the smaller sizes straight needles are fine. That's what I am doing for the smallest size. The circular needles are probably useful if you are making the largest sizes because of the nu Ber of stitches - it enables you to see the whole width of the piece.
The smaller needles (usually use 5mm for aran) give a much better neater finish to garter stitch.
