Difficulty level: ** Easy

Free Doll Dress Crochet Pattern

I've received a few requests to make a version of the American Girl Autumn Lace Dress for Wellie Wishers. Here it is. You can use thread of 1 color, but for more interest, use 2, 3 or 4 colors in different combinations and sequences.

This dress will fit 14.5” dolls, such as American Girl Wellie Wishers and Hearts4Hearts.

Skills Required/Technique Used: chain, single crochet, double crochet

Materials: Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s Classic Crochet Thread size #10 (100% mercerized cotton) - 1 ball of main color and small amount of other colors.
3-4 sew-on snaps, sewing needle and sewing thread of matching colors to attach the snaps, any additional small embellishments to your taste. Underskirt is recommended.

Hooks: steel hooks 1.75 mm and 1.5 mm OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge: 14 dc x 8 rows = 2” x 2” (5 cm x 5 cm).

Abbreviations:
Dc - double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Ch – chain
sl st - slip stitch
RS - right side
WS - wrong side

Dress

The dress is worked top-down back and forth to the hip line, leaving an opening at the back. Then, you can either continue in rows, or in rounds. Here I describe how to work the skirt in rounds. The groups of 3 dc in the beginning and 3 dc at the end of each row form a button band.

Yoke:

With hook 1.75mm chain 49 sts. Continue with hook 1.5 mm

Row 1 (RS): ch 1, 1 sc in each chain across = 49 sts.

Row 2 (WS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 3 sc, 2 dc in the next sc, *1 dc in each of the next 4 sc, 2 dc in the next sc - repeat from * 8 times, 1 dc in of the last 4 sc. Turn. = 58 sts

Row 3: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in the next dc, *ch 3, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in the next/third sc - repeat from * 17 times, ch 2, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc. Turn. = 75 sts

Row 4: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ch 1, skip ch-2-space and sc, *3 dc in ch-3-space, ch 1 - repeat from * 17 times, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc. Turn. = 75 sts

Row 5: ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn. = 75 sts

Divide for sleeves and bodice:

Row 6: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 sc, (ch1, skip 1 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sc) twice, ch 5, skip 17 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sc, *ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sc - repeat from * 4 times, ch5, skip 17 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sc, (ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc) twice. Turn. = 51 sts

Row 7: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, * ch 1 over ch-1-space, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc - repeat from * 12 times. Turn.

Repeat row 7 four more times.

Row 12 (eyelet/belt row): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, *ch1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in the next st - repeat across till the last 3 sts, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc. Turn.

Row 13: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ch2, 1 sc in ch-1-space, * ch 3, 1 sc in ch-1-space - repeat from * 22 times, ch 2, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc. Turn.

Closing into round:

Row 15: ch 1, sc in each st across till last 3 sts. Fold the working piece and overlap the button bands (right bb under the left bb), 1 sc in the next dc, connect with slip stitch with the first st on the right bb, repeat for the remaining 2 sts. = 92 sts

Continue to work in rounds.

Round 18: ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, join with sl st. Cut thread.

Belt

You can either use a piece of 1/4” wide ribbon, or crochet the belt. Chain a string about 15” long, make a row of sc in each chain across.

Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Sew 3-4 snaps onto the button bands. Add embellishments to your taste.

Have fun!
